First, hole saws cut differently. A cheap or dull saw can wobble and cut up to 1/16" oversize, which matters when you want a snug fit. Use a sharp, rigid saw, and back up the exit side with scrap wood to prevent tear-out.

Second, clearances aren't just about fit. In studs and joists, local code often requires minimum distances from the hole edge to the stud edge, and nail plates may be required to protect the pipe. The right hole saw size makes this easier, but it doesn't replace reading your local code.
