Charlotte Pipe PVC Fittings: A 5-Point Field Checklist Before You Order

Use this checklist if you are about to order Charlotte Pipe PVC fittings, CPVC fittings, or cast iron fittings for a commercial plumbing job and don't want to pay for the same mistake twice. This is not a theory article. It is a five-step field checklist we run in the trailer before sending an order.

1. Label the material family before you write any size

PVC is usually white and common in DWV applications. CPVC is usually light yellow or cream and is used in different water temperature and pressure applications. They need different solvent cements, and swapping one for the other is not a substitution.

In July 2021, I wrote 2-inch couplings on a material request. The plan called for CPVC. By the time someone caught it, the order had already shipped. It cost roughly $500 in restocking plus a four-day delay. The lesson stuck: the first word on the order line should be the material family—PVC, CPVC, or cast iron. If that word is missing, don't send the order.

2. Check the Charlotte Pipe catalog for end style and socket depth

A common gap shows up with a 2-inch PVC 90: the regular elbow and the street elbow. The street version has a spigot on one end, so it inserts directly into the previous hub. That saves a coupling in some layouts, but it changes the parts list. In 2022, I ordered 60 regular elbows when the layout needed 32 street elbows. It was a $560 mistake plus a two-day delay. Looking back, I should have checked the catalog's end-style column for every row instead of scanning only the size column.

3. Put the right wrenches on the truck before the crew starts

Tool selection belongs in the same checklist. If the job has large-diameter or corroded joints, get a 60 inch pipe wrench into the inventory or into the order. There is no replacement for the leverage it gives on a stubborn connection. But bigger isn't automatically better. A 60 inch pipe wrench applied to a solvent-welded Charlotte pipe PVC fitting can crack the hub before you feel resistance. For plastic fittings, the wrench belongs on a metal thread adapter or a nut, not on the plastic socket while you force the joint.

The smooth jaw pipe wrench earns its place on finished surfaces: brass, chrome, polished pipe, or soft metal where serrated teeth leave permanent marks. I keep one in the finish plumbing kit. It doesn't bite as aggressively as a toothed jaw, and that is exactly the point. Use it when appearance matters, not for breaking loose a severely rusted joint.

4. What size hole saw for 2-inch PVC pipe? Use a 2-1/2-inch hole saw

The common answer is 2-1/2 inches. A 2-inch PVC Schedule 40 pipe has an outside diameter of 2.375 inches, not 2.000 inches. If you cut with a 2-inch hole saw, the hole is smaller than the pipe—or rather, smaller than the pipe's outside diameter. The pipe simply will not fit through it.

Use the 2-1/2-inch cutter for a close, clean pass-through. If you need room for expansion, insulation, or fire caulking, a 2-3/4-inch hole may make more sense. Just don't assume every framing member can accept a larger hole. Check the hole-size limits for the joist, stud, or engineered lumber before the first bore.

My crew learned this in 2022 when someone grabbed a 2-inch hole saw because the line item said 2-inch. It doesn't work. We re-drilled the openings with a wider saw and lost a half-day. Now the drill list includes both numbers: pipe size and actual hole saw size.

5. Cross-check the completed order with someone else

Do it before you hit send, not after the delivery truck arrives. Each line on the order should include the full material, nominal size, end style, catalog part number, and quantity. If a line has to be read twice, something is probably wrong with it.

Our team uses a two-person review: one person reads the order, and the second person checks it against the catalog or takeoff. It feels slow at first, but it catches exactly the mistakes that autofill doesn't know to catch. Since we started doing this, we have caught 47 potential errors at the review stage in the past 18 months. Not all of them were expensive, but all of them were avoidable.

I am in favor of digital buying and online catalogs. The point is that automation speeds up the process—it doesn't know whether the plan calls for PVC or CPVC, a regular elbow or a street elbow. That layer still takes a human.

Final advice and a boundary

This checklist fits the ordinary North American commercial plumbing work I handle. If you are ordering pressure-rated piping, a specialty fire-protection system, or a metric specification, verify against the engineered plans and the manufacturer data. Your mileage will vary, and it should.

Bottom line: confirm the material family first, check the Charlotte Pipe catalog for end style and dimensions, choose the wrench based on the surface and the torque, and remember that 2-inch PVC needs a 2-1/2-inch hole saw.
